The Panchayat rule is the rule or political system of Nepal from 2017 to 2046 BS based on panchayat raj, which was a political system of self-governance. Traditionally panchayats consisted a wise and respected elders chosen and accepted by the local community. These assemblies settled disputes between individuals and between villages in the past specially in rural settings. They help the governors to implement the national policy.

Panchayat raj was a political system of self- governance that exists from 2017 to 2046 BS in Nepal. The world "Panchayat raj" literally means rule by the assembly of fire people. Here "Panch" means five and "ayat" means assembly and "raj" means rule. Therefore, Panchayat raj was the assembly of five rulers.
