Panchayat rule was the political system of Nepal from 2017 BS to 2046 BS that was based on the "Panchayat Raj" which was the political system of self-governance. In 2017 BS, king Mahendra used his power and took charge of the state claiming that the congress government had fostered corruption, promoted party above national interest and failed to maintain law and order. Finally, king Mahendra was successful to establish panchayat system in Nepal. This rule lasted for three decades during which a lot of political incidents took place. The first Mass movement that lasted for 49 days in 2046 BS on the leadership of Ganeshman Singh uprooted the panchayat system on 26th Chaitra, 2046 BS.
