Define chemical equation. Why is the burning of wood called chemical change? Mention some significance of chemical equation. What does the formula H2SO4 signify? Explain.

Chemical equations are symbolic representations of chemical reactions in which the reactants and the products are expressed in terms of their respective chemical formulae.

The burning of wood leads to the formation of new substances like ash (carbon), carbon dioxide gas, water vapour, heat and light. This change is irreversible and         hence, considered as chemical change.

Some significance of chemical equation are

1. It explains the specific conditions of temperature, pressure, catalyst, etc . under which reaction takes place.

2. It states whether energy is evolved or needs to be supplied.

3. It describes briefly the names of the reactants , the products and the state of matter .

The formula H2SO4 signifies Sulphuric acid. This chemical is used as a chemical intermediate to manufacture other chemicals and cleaning metal surfaces. The molar mass of sulfuric acid is 98.07848 g mol.
