Let’s talk about how to write great essays. By the way, what is a great essay? What makes it great?


A great college essay paints the picture of the most important dimensions of your life in an interesting way. It is very important for your essay to have hooks that pull the admission officer towards your essay. It can be humor, misery, achievements, anything but it should be interesting. The admission officer read hundreds and thousands of essays everyday. They will dump your essay if the first few lines don't have the hook. So, make it interesting.


Another rule of writing essays is show-don’t-tell. There is a difference between showing and telling. While you show, you present the real happening and let the reader feel the emotions of their own. While you tell, you share your emotions towards the happening. So, present your experience, your projects, your moments, or anything that you are writing.

The final thing that I have to say is that writing an essay once is not enough. You cannot stop after composing a single draft of an essay. You have to re-edit, re-draft, re-write. This is very important. Review your essay everyday. You will find something to improve.


There is a thing you should avoid as well. Don’t collect pieces of essays from different successful essays and compose your essay. Your essay has to be unique, it should reflect you in your voice.
