Submitting your Common App

Now that you have completed answering the “Common App”, you should answer some college specific questions, add recommenders and submit the application by the deadline.

Navigate to the “My Colleges” tab and click on the first college of the list. You will see the following interface.

Here you can check the application deadlines, application fee, and other information of the respective college.

In the expansion below the college name you clicked, you will see three options: Questions, Recommenders and FERPA, and Review and Submit Common App.

Click Questions and fill in the additional details that college asks you. Different colleges ask different sets of questions. Some (especially competitive colleges) may even ask you essay questions.

After you complete that section, go to Recommenders and sign FERPA. To sign FERPA, open this section and click “View Details” under FERPA Release Authorization. Click “View Release Authorization” and continue. Select “I waive my right……..” and sign (enter your name) with date. This basically means you are agreeing not to look at the letter of recommendations that your counselor and teachers write on your behalf.

Now, click “Invite Recommenders” to invite teachers and counselors to submit documents for you. I have shown below about my counselor and recommenders that I had invited.

Now, you have added recommenders as well, you can go to the final section and submit the application.

Click “Review and Submit”, review your applications, read and check statements, sign your name with date, and submit the application. Congratulations!

If your counselor and teachers haven’t submitted the documents yet, you can still submit the application and they can submit the documents a day later. You may have to inform the admission officer of the respective college in this case.

After two or three days of your submission, the college will download your application and submit it to the respective university’s application portal. You will receive an email about it.

Great! You just learned to build your application completely. In the next article, I will talk about writing meaningful and impactful essays. Join me there.
