Navigating Common App

Let’s play with the interface of Common App and familiarize yourself with it. The first thing you do is create your account. To create an account, go to Common App and click “Create an account” at the top right. Select “first year student”, enter details, and click “Create Account”. Yay, you are in the Common App now.

After you sign in you will see the following interface.

This is your dashboard. Dashboard has your apply-list of colleges. You won’t see any colleges initially. To add colleges to your apply-list you have to navigate to the “College Search” tab. Do you see it after the “Common App” tab and before the “Financial Aid Resources” tab. Click there and you will see the following interface.

You should enter the name of the university you want to apply to and you will see the university in the list below. Click on it and “Add College”. You can check different rounds of applications, its deadlines, etc as well. After you find all colleges in your list, click on the second tab, “My Colleges”.

There you will see college specific details and additional questions of the colleges you added to the list.

Here, you will complete college-specific questions and supplements, invite and manage recommenders, and submit your application. However, before completing the college-specific questions and supplements, you have to complete your common application. To complete it, navigate to the “Common App” tab right to the current tab.

You will see the following interface in the “Common App” tab.

In the left-side-bar, you will see options like Profile, Family, Education and so on. Each of these options has categories of details to be filled in. For example, Profile has Personal Information, Address and so on.

In the next article, we will fill in different categories of Profile. Join me there.
