Describe all the types of secondary storage devices.

The types of secondary storage devices are as follow:

  1. Magnetic Memory
  2. Optical Memory

Magnetic Memory : Magnetic storage is the manipulation of magnetic fields on a medium in order to record audio, video or other data. Magnetic storage has been around in many forms since 1888 by Oberlan Smith, who publicized his audio recording on a wire in Electrical World.Magnetic storage or magnetic recording is the storage of data on a magnetized medium. Magnetic storage uses different patterns of magnetisation in a magnetizable material to store data and is a form of non-volatile memory. The information is accessed using one or more read/write heads. For example: magnetic tape, floppy disks etc.

Optical Memory : Optical storage is electronic storage medium that uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital (binary) data. In optical-storage technology, a laser beam encodes digital data onto an optical, or laser, disk in the form of tiny pits arranged in a spiral track on the disk's surface. IBM defines optical storage as "any storage method that uses a laser to store and retrieve data from optical media." Britannica notes that it "uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital data." Compact disc and DVD are examples of optical media. For example: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, Blue Ray etc.
