21 Chemistry -- Non-Metals: Allotropes of Oxygen

Explain acidic, basic, neutral, amphoteric, peroxide and mixed oxides with example.

Explain acidic, basic, neutral, amphoteric, peroxide and mixed oxides with example.

a. Acidic oxide:

Generally non metallic oxides are acidic in nature because the bond in them is covalent because of which they have low bp and mp. they form acids when combined with water.

eg, CO2, SO3

rxn: CO2 + H2O ------------> H2CO3 ( carbonic acid)

b. Basic oxides:

These are generally metallic oxides held by ionic bond with high BP and MP. These yield base when treated with water.

eg, Na2O , K2

rxn: Na2O + H2O ----------> 2NaOH ( sodium hydroxide)

c. Neutral oxide:

Neither acidic nor basic oxides are neutral. eg, CO, NO, H2O

d. Amphoteric Oxides:

Oxides exhibiting both acidic and basic characters depending on reaction are called amphoteric oxides. On reaction with acid, it exhibits basic character and on reaction with base, it exhibits acidic character.

eg, zinc oxide,  Aluminium oxide

rxn:     Basic property:       ZnO          +        HCl     ----------->    ZnCl2    +         H2

                                                                      (acid)                       (salt)

         Acidic property:          ZnO         +         NaOH  ---------->   Na2ZnO2  (sodium zincate)  + H2

                                                                       ( base)                    (salt)

e. Peroxide:

Oxides in which two oxygen atoms are bonded covalently ( single covalent bond ) are called peroxides.

eg, H2O2 (dihydrogen dioxide) , HO2 ( hydrogen dioxide)
