What is the role of HCl in detection of Group-II basic radicals?

Detection of Group-II basic radicals is done by H2S. In qualitative salt analysis, they are precipitated in the form of their sulphides(metal sulphides). Precipitation takes place only when ionic product exceeds solubility product. The solubility of Group II basic radicals is relatively lower. The ionization of hydrogen sulphide is suppressed in the presence of hydrogen ions furnished by HCl (Hydrogen ion acts as a common ion). The remaining sulphide ion is only sufficient to precipitate Group-II basic radicals.
