Epithelial tissue or epithelium forms the outer covering of the skin and also lines the body cavity. It forms the lining of respiratory, digestive, reproductive and excretory tracts. 

Functions of Epithelial Tissues

1. Epithelial tissue covers underlying body part and protects from mechanical injuries and entry of germ particles.

2. It forms skin derivatives like hair, scales, feathers, nail, hoof, claws, etc.

3. It is sometimes found as secretary epithelium for secretion of various body fluids; like epithelial lining of alimentary canal secretes mucus which makes the passage of food easy and smooth. 

4. The glandular epithelium in various glands produces enzymes, hormones, milk, etc.

5. The sensory epithelium perceives various stimuli for the sensation like touch, smell, taste,etc.

6.The germinal epithelium produces gametes; like sperms in testes and eggs in ovaries.

7.The epithelial lining of uriniferous tubules helps in excretion.
