"The oval portrait" where there is a tragic and horror story of the women whose portrait was made signifies that beauty of the women was cause of the death. Since she was so beautiful her husband wanted to make her portrait to keep her beauty alive but due to her husband's passion and obsessiveness towards art he lost his living wife just to keep her beauty alive through the painting. It would be totally different if the painter would value his living beautiful wife rather than his painting.

The central theme of the story is that the painter loved his art more than his wife so be didn't really care about his alive wife but just went after his art. He thought his art was a living example but it was an example without the subject. The woman depicted in the oval portrait is the painter's wife who was maiden of rarest beauty and not more lovely than full of glee. She was the subject of the oval portrait.
