Aksionov has became quite old . He spent many years in prison that he himself doesn't know if his family remembers him or not . He desires to die in the prison instead of going out . That's why Aksionov doesn't wish to return to his family at the end of the story.

Aksionov doesn't wish to return to his family as he remembers his suffering of 26 years in prison for the crime he did not commit and also he thinks that his wife is dead and his children have forgotten him.
