Why is the reaction between Alkene and Halogen carried out under dark conditions?

In presence of light halogens under go homolysis and yield free radical, but halogenation is a electrophilic substitution reaction. Free radical addition leads to formation of alkanes so reaction between alkenes and halogen is carried in dark to avoid halogen participate in addition and conduct electrophilic substitution.
