The author's favourite hobby is walking. She likes it so much because of the movement, the rhythm, the instability of the senses, and the body that initiates it. She is very fond of it and enjoys a lot of physical sensations while walking.

The writer preferred walking long distances especially on such roads that were unpaved and uneven, like the roads around her uncle house (mamaghar) when she was very young.

Being able to take shortcuts and discover new regions while walking provides the author and her classmates a sense of freedom.

Sydney's roads were paved and well maintained whereas Kathmandu's roads were dirtier, more chaotic and less maintained than Sydney's.

Walking helped the author in the new country by renewing the circumstances of her life. It helped her to get out all kinds of pressures and search for a pace and a rhythm that she felt most natural.

The treasures of Petersham, where the writer lived with her family were as follows:

1. Across the big Paramatta Road from Leichhardt, where the buildings of her high school stand, was the completely nondescript Petersham.
2. The place faced the dreary backsides of shops along Paramatta Road.
3. There was a small park with few visitors and a large rock in one corner of Petersham.

As she went to the United States, she felt that she had travelled to 'a desert, to emptiness' due to the lack of people to share her thoughts and feelings with.
