Africa is the second largest continent of the world. It is margined by equator, tropic of cancer and tropic of caprican. The physical features are very diverse here. The snow clad mountains to very hot desert are also found here. Most of the parts of Africa falls in tropical zone. So, Africa consists of tropical forests, Savana grasslands and tropical deserts. It is also called plateau of plateaus as it it made of several plateaus. The famous mountain range are Atlas mountain range, etc. Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak and Sahara is the largest desert that occupies almost one-fifth part of Africa. Nile river, Victoria falls, Savana grasslands has made Africa famous in the world.

We know, most of the parts of Africa is covered withdeserts. But still there are some cultivableland also.People are also practicing agriculture in theoasis. Agricultureis the main occupation of African peoples. About 75% oftotal population are practicing agriculture but only 8% oftotal land is under cultivation. In most of the areasubstance farming is practiced. Maize is widely cultivatedin Savana region while paddy, wheat and cotton arecultivated in the Nile valley.

Most of the African countries still backward in development. Why?

Most of the African countries are still backward in development because:
- Civil war and misunderstanding.
- Lack of peaceful co-existence.
- Misuse of budgets for buying of unnecessary ornaments.
- Famine, illiteracy, etc.
- Fatal and chronicdiseases.
-Lack of proper plansand policies.
- Misuse of the available natural resources.
- Lack of funds for mining and other activities.
- Dictatorial rule and poverty.
