"A Sunny Morning' is a one-act play by two Spanish playwrights, Serafin and Josquin Alvarez Quintero. Set in a park in Madrid on a sunny autumn morning, the play narrates the reunion of two lovers, Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo, now in their 70s meeting at a park who in their youth were passionate lovers but torn apart by the cruelty of fate.


The drama begins with Dona Laura, a beautiful white-haired lady of about seventy, happily feeding pigeons in the park. Don Gonzalo, a gentleman of seventy, gouty and impatient, enters and, finding his favourite park bench occupied by the three priests, sits beside his lover from the past. Both of them visit the park regularly. being accompanied by their servants because of their old age. They are annoyed. with each other as both want to bench themselves. Gonzalo rudely comments on her feeding the pigeons and starts reading his poems loudly. After asking her permission while reading from the poet Campoamor's “Twenty years pass", both feel that they were lovers in the past. He tells her that he first met him in Valencia, a city in Spain, which also happens to be his native place. Surprisingly. Laura also tells him she had also Spent her youth at a villa called Maricela, not far from Valencia Gonzalo, who was also familiar with the villa asks if she remembers a beautiful lady called Laura. She lies to him that the girl was her best friend. They talk about love-affair between a friend and a gallant lover. Gonzalo tells her that the follower was his cousin. When the girl was to be married off to a merchant, the lover duels with him, in the process wounding him badly, and runs off to Madrid. She waits for her lover to return but when he does not, marries the merchant after two years. Gonzalo tells her that his cousin joined the army and met with glorious death. Both realise that they are lying but pretend to be unaware. At the end of the play, both Laura and Gonzalo do not acknowledge who they really are and leave the park promising to meet the next day. In this way, the playwright duos bring not only a comical side of a romantic relationship but also let us feel the pain of tragic separation.
