US Visa Interview Sample Questions-Answers

US Visa Interview Sample Questions-Answers

While preparing for the Visa interview, I had multiple mock interviews with my friends who had succeeded in the interview. This simulated the real interview experience to my brain and taught me to listen and respond to the Visa Officer (VO).

In the first mock-interview, I was speaking whatever comes to my mind randomly. So, I decided to organize my answer pattern. For this, I collected all the probable interview questions, put them in a google document and started answering one by one in the written form. After I completed answering, I reviewed my answers and started improving. I used to revise the answers everyday and my answers got way better by the end. My answer pattern sounded more natural. I had a map of every answer, where to start, what to include and where to end. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to follow this.

Here are my answers to these questions.

  1. Why the USA?

Ma’am, I am interested in building ed-tech softwares and digitizing the education system here in Nepal. For this, I have to gain skills like scalable web design which I can learn in the USA better than anywhere else. The libral arts education allows me to learn computer science and filmmaking simultaneously which are my two top interests. I can execute what I learn practically in labs, and coding clubs with my international friends. And in summers, I can learn the work-culture of tech companies. So, the USA is the only good option, ma’am.

  2. What’s your purpose for going to the US?

I am going to the US to pursue my undergraduate education in Computer and Information Sciences in the College of Idaho, ma’am.

  3. What are you planning to study?

I am planning to study Computer and Information Sciences in the College of Idaho, ma’am.

  4. Why computer science?

I have fallen in love with computer science since class 9, ma’am. I met a computer science teacher from the United States and learned to build websites and apps. I have built a digital learning platform and it’s used more than 200 thousand times by nepali students so far. I want to scale this up and digitize the education system of Nepal. For this I need softwaring engineering and information analyzing skills. So, I am pursuing CIS, ma’am.

  5. Where are you going?

I am going to the College of Idaho located in Caldwell Idaho to pursue CIS degree, ma’am.

  6. Why did you choose this college?

I have loved the College of Idaho and its community since I found it during my research. I am interested in building digital education softwares. I am fascinated by the research project of my professor Dave. He is researching digital classrooms. Since it aligns with my vision, I can learn a lot from him. I will execute the learning practically in the coding club there. And of course the scholarship I have received is a great addition. So, I have chosen this college, ma’am.

  7. How did you find this university/college?

In St. Xaviers, our student counselor, guides us to apply to US universities. Under her guidance, I was researching good universities for CS. I attended sessions organized by USEF and studied princeton reviews, niche, etc and found about the college of Idaho in one of these blogs, ma’am.

  8. What’s your plan after graduation?

After graduation, I will start working in my company Ask Mattrab, which is a digital education company here in Nepal. Developing the required ed-tech softwares, I will collaborate with the education ministry of Nepal to digitize the education system here in Nepal, ma’am.

  9. Who is gonna sponsor you for your education?

Though I have got a 90% tuition scholarship, there is a cost to be covered. My parents pay the rest for me, ma’am. My parents have a combined yearly income of 32K. They have savings of 28K ready to cover my first year's cost. We also have immovable property worth 200K to cover the cost in case of emergencies, ma’am. My father works as a part-time horticulture expert at the Agriculture and Livestock ministry and earns 9K there. He owns Cardamom farm and seasonal orange farm in Sankhuwasabha where he makes 12K + 2K. My mother owns a dhaka clothing shop and she exports dakha clothes to India and Europe through agents and earns above 9K.

How many employees are in the cardamom farm?

25 before but just 12 now because we use machines now.

  10. How many universities did you apply to?

I applied to 20 universities. That is the maximum number of universities that I can apply through a common app for free. I applied to Stanford, Cornell, Richmond, and of course the College of Idaho. Among the colleges I was accepted to, the academics, extracurriculars and scholarships were best in the college of Idaho. So, I am going there, ma’am.

  11. Will you come back from the USA?

Yes, ma’am. I plan to return to Nepal and start working in my company Ask Mattrab, which is a digital education company in Nepal.

  12. How long will you stay in the USA?

I will stay there for four years until I complete my studies, ma’am.

    I have got a total scholarship of $31,630. It's a 24K academic scholarship and 7630 College scholarships.

  15. Can you tell me the name of some of your professors?

Yes, ma’am. I have been chatting with professor Dave Rosoff and got to know about his research in the digital classroom. Also, Professor Scott is our English professor.

  16. What’s the scope of your course?

Computer science is multidimensional and it has multiple scopes, ma’am. Web development teaches us to build websites and apps. Algorithms analysis makes us programmers. There are graphics, games, and so on. But, I want my expertise in scalable web design and information analysis, ma’am.

  17. What are your future plans after the completion of your studies?

After completing my studies, I will return and work in my company Ask Mattrab, which is a digital education company here in Nepal.  Developing the required ed-tech softwares, I will collaborate with the education ministry of Nepal to digitize the education system here in Nepal, ma’am.

  18. How much money can you earn after the completion of your studies?

I don’t have the exact figure, ma’am, but as I build ed-tech softwares and collaborate with the education ministry on digital education, I should be making around a crore annually, ma’am.

  19. Why should I grant you a US Visa?

My dream of digitizing education in Nepal is associated with this visa, ma’am. If you don’t grant me a visa, I won’t be able to learn scalable web design and information analysis. And I will never be able to develop national scale ed-tech softwares. So, I really hope that you grant me a visa, ma’am.

  20. What will you do if your US visa is rejected this time?

I will feel extremely sad and maybe even cry to see my dreams and aims broken but I will come back again, ma’am.

  21. Have you applied for a visa before?

No, ma’am. This is my first time applying for a visa.

  22. Why Idaho?

I started looking about Idaho since I researched about the college of Idaho. I love this place because my college is there. I  am excited to be involved and grow in my campus community, and coding club. My professors are very supportive and helpful. Additionally, the weather in Caldwell is very similar to the weather here. I will easily adapt there. Also, potato is famous there and it’s my favorite.

Important! I’m not saying to write and memorize each answer as a whole. I want you to remember the patterns you see in each answer and recognize the points that you shouldn’t miss to mention.

Even though I was ready to answer each of these questions, I was asked just a single question which was different from any questions I had practiced with. The visa officer asked me about my internship experience, listened for a few seconds and passed me a green slip. So, the interview is very unpredictable. However, you should prepare for the potential questions.

In the next article, I will talk about what happens on the visa interview day.
