Flow of Information through a cell 

The flow of information in a cell takes place through two routes.

1. 
   Flow of intrinsic information    (or genetic information)
   


2. Flow of extrinsic information

1. Flow of intrinsic information

• DNA contains genetic information to control intrinsic activities (metabolism and expression of characteristics) of a cell by synthesizing protein molecules. 
  
  


• The information of DNA is carried to cytoplasm by mRNA (Transcription)


• Transcription is the process of copying a segment of DNA into RNA.


• The RNA synthesizes protein on the basis of information. (Translation)


• Translation is the process of translating the sequence of messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule to a sequence of amino acids during protein synthesis.


• Proteins regulate the activities of the cell.
  

2. Flow of extrinsic information 

• In this process, information comes from outside which is brought into the cell in the form of specific stimuli and information molecules.


• Some cells or specific glands secrete substances like hormones which on being transported to the cell control their activities.


• Some of these regulatory substances enter into the cell and combine with cellular receptors while some of them bind with molecules present in the cell and control their activities.

So, these were the two information transportation mechanisms in an Eukaryotic cell which is primarily responsible to control the overall metabolism and characteristics of a cell.
